The following are reviews of some of my favorite and most-used vegetarian products. I generally try to stick to things that can be found in your local grocery store, but occasionally you may have to take a trip to the health food store to find one of these products. I will be adding to this list over time, since there are a LOT of great vegetarian products out there!
Superior Touch Better than Bouillon No Chicken and No Beef Bases
I use these gel-form bouillons practically on a daily basis. They really do taste like chicken broth or beef broth, but there's no meat involved! I use them for flavoring or reconstitute them and use as a base for soups and sauces.
Quorn Naked Chik'n Cutlets
Here's another food I eat practically every day. Quorn is big in the UK, but is only beginning to become popular stateside. Their products range from fake ground beef to fake turkey burgers. The standout, in my opinion though, is their "naked" faux chicken cutlets and tenders. These are great for topping a salad, for taking a lead role in a killer "chicken" noodle soup, or just basted and grilled.
Morningstar Farms Veggie Sausage Patties
I swear, these taste JUST like real sausage patties, except without the grease! We've served them to die-hard omnivores, and everyone loves them. I use them not just for breakfast; I also chop them up and put them on pizza or in pasta sauce.
Boca Ground Crumbles
There are many brands of ground beef stand-ins out there, but Boca does it best. When you replace the ground beef in a dish with these, generally omnivores won't even notice. The one downside is that ground crumbles won't form into shapes (i.e. meatballs or meatloaf) very well. To remedy this, just add an egg or two (or just egg whites) to the recipe, and you get a similar texture.
